Impasto painting technique popular with the Rembrandt, Titian and the French Impressionists as well as Vincent Van Gogh. With this technique, the paint is laid on the canvas or parts of the canvas very thickly, usually thick enough for painting-knife or brush strokes to show.
Source Lastly, some of the Impasto texture was brushed away from the candy canes.
