Mine is a very simple six word memoir and I believe it describes me completely. My love of traveling along with my love of making images, whether I take extensive trip abroad or a just a day or weekend road trip, is an important part of who I am. I'm also happy my family loves to travel with me!

Plum Elegance

My love for photographing plums rivals that of pears. Displayed are two images of some Italian prune plums that I have photographed. The top color image has one layer of texture-a subtle one-just to soften the effect. The black and white image was processed in ACR, then using the Lo-Fi app- Kodachrome look with a slight blur, heavy grain and a vignette was applied.

New Beginnings and a New Piece of Pottery

Adding to my ever-growing collection of pottery pieces is this cocoa brown casserole dish bought while visiting my daughter in historic Bethania, a Moravian town once included in the original tract of Wachovia near Winston Salem. Bethania was established in 1759 by the Moravians as a self-sufficient farming community. Many of the Moravian style buildings have been preserved and the town is on the National Historic Register of Historic Places.

Just a short walk down the main street, you will come upon Bethania Mill and Village Shoppes, a former working mill which dates to 1899. The mill has been restored and is home to various gift shops and a cafe. After lunch and a glass of "In a Heartbeat" wine from Divine Llama Vineyards at the Muddy Creek Cafe, we wound our way through the various gift shops beautifully decorated for Christmas. On the back wall of the of the Mill Stone Store and Gallery there was a large selection of locally made pottery. It was here that I found this piece of pottery. The name of the potter eludes me. A very rustic dish to display these pears.

Lunch on New Year's Day-Black-Eyed Peas, Collard Greens and Cornbread

Not one to play around with luck or lack thereof , my lunch today was black-eyed peas with bacon, spicy fresh collard greens and a big hunk of cornbread made with organic stone ground white cornmeal, part of a CSA box my daughter gets once a week. According to Southern folklore, eating black eyed peas will bring luck and prosperity throughout the year. To triple the chances of good luck, I served collard greens which represents paper money (green) and cornbread representing gold. Whether or not, I become prosperous, time will tell, but being a daughter of the South, my meal brought back many memories of growing up in a small farm town with a mother and a grandmother, both expert cooks who didn't consider black eyed peas, collard greens and cornbread haute cuisine, but nutritious, inexpensive and delicious family food.

Collard greens are available year round, but are best from November to April and are said to be more flavorful after a frost. A cruciferous vegetable, collards are considered one of the world's healthiest foods. When buying fresh collards, choose those with bright crisp green leaves. When possible, buy from a nearby organic farm for maximum freshness.

Braised Collard Greens

2 pounds collard greens, rinsed, stemmed, leaves rolled and sliced into strips

4 slices bacon

1 onion, diced

1 bottle (12 ounce) beer

12 ounces chicken broth, homemade or canned

1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

salt and pepper to taste

a few dashes red wine vinegar

In a large saucepan, cook bacon slices until slightly crispy. Remove from pan and drain on paper towels. Dice and reserve. Add onion to pan and saute until softened. Add beer and chicken broth to pan, stirring to bring up bits of bacon fond. Add collards and bacon; bring to a boil, reduce heat and cook for 30 minutes, or until tender and to your taste. Add a few dashes red wine vinegar, salt and pepper to taste. Serves 8.

Black-eyed Peas with Bacon

Recipe Adapted From Hoppin' John

1 pound dried black-eyed peas

4-5 slices bacon

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup onion, diced

1/2 cup carrot, diced small

1/2 green pepper, diced small

2 quarts chicken stock

1 bay leaf

1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves

salt and pepper to taste (do not add salt until peas are cooked)

Wash and sort dried peas, discarding blemished ones. Soak peas overnight in hot tap water, using three times as much water as dried peas. Render bacon in heavy saucepan. Add garlic, onion, carrot and green pepper and sauté until tender. Add drained peas, chicken stock, thyme and bay leaf. Simmer until tender, careful not to stir too much or beans will be mushy. Add salt and pepper to taste. Makes large pot of peas.

Easy Southern Cornbread

1-1/2 cups white or yellow cornmeal

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 eggs

2 teaspoons unsalted butter, melted

1 cup, plus extra buttermilk

1-1/2 bacon grease or vegetable oil

Preheat oven to 410° F. Pour bacon grease or vegetable oil into a small (8-inch) iron frying pan. Place in hot oven for about ten minutes. Meanwhile,whisk together dry ingredients. Whisk eggs into buttermilk. Add to dry ingredients along with the melted butter. You may need more buttermilk to achieve a batter like consistency. Protecting hands, carefully remove frying pan from oven. Place on heatproof surface. Pour batter into hot pan. Place in oven. Bake 15-20 minutes until golden brown and tests done. Makes

Colonial Park Cemetery-Savannah

Tombstones rescued from further deterioration or moved to make pathways line a brick wall in Colonial Park Cemetery in downtown Savannah, Georgia. The second cemetery in colonial Savannah, Colonial Park was established about 1750. Originally the burial ground for the Christ Church Parish, the cemetery was enlarged around 1789 to accommodate all denominations.

Many dueling victims are buried there as well as around 700 victims from the 1820 Yellow Fever epidemic and distinguished Savannahians, among those are Button Gwinnett, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, Archibald Bulloch, first president of Georgia and Hugh McCall, an early historian of Georgia. Naturally, the cemetery has its share of ghosts, the most famous being Rene Asche Rondolier, a disfigured giant of a person accused of murdering and mutilating two girls found in the cemetery. Rondolier was dragged from his hiding place in the cemetery to a swamp and lynched. However, the killings continued and it was said that his ghost was responsible.

The cemetery was closed for burials prior to the Civil War, so no Confederate soldiers are buried there, but Union troops took over the grounds during the occupation of Savannah looting and desecrating the graves and even changing the dates on the tombstones. Colonial Park Cemetery was designated a city park in 1896. Source.

Candy Cane Reflection

Two candy canes reflected in a mirror with a red background form a heart to celebrate the holidays. Kim Klassen's 'and then some' texture was added several times with two of the textures enhanced with Snap Art 2 to create an Impasto painting technique popular with the Rembrandt, Titian and the French Impressionists as well as Vincent Van Gogh. With this technique, the paint is laid on the canvas or parts of the canvas very thickly, usually thick enough for painting-knife or brush strokes to show.Source Lastly, some of the Impasto texture was brushed away from the candy canes.

Only a few leaves cling tenaciously to this tree once brilliant with varying shades of red, brown and green, but one by one the wind and the rain will soon strip it bare. My house overlooks this natural park where the kids play, dogs romp, and summer neighborhood block parties are traditional. This year, the foliage was stunning, almost blindingly so, with the afternoon sun illuminating the leaves. I am grateful that I could gaze out on this beautiful sight.

Fort Pulaski Soldiers Musket Firing - Digital Infrared

Ft Pulaski continues to be one of my favorite historical sites to visit and photograph. I always see something there that I haven't seen before to capture with my camera. On a beautiful, but hot and humid summer afternoon, my family and I attended the musket and cannon firing program at the Fort. Ft. Pulaski is a National Monument located near Savannah, Georgia. Volunteers dressed in Civil War uniforms demonstrate historically correct firing drill copied from artillery manuals of that era. Shown is one of the digital infrared photos of the many I shot that day while watching the drill. This image was converted from the Raw digital infrared file using Silver Efex Pro 2.0 Two textures from Kim Klassen-

A rose in full bloom from my neighbor's rose garden, antique rose cups and saucers, a vintage faux tortoise shell pen and my husband's grandmother's recipe for lime sherbet all make up this romantic image processed with two layers of Kim Klassen's texture "phoebe". The vintage look is similar to Kim's photoshop recipe on this week's Texture Tuesday entry, but the glamour glow filter was used on one of the phoebe layers.

Pear Still Life Painting

Not much post processing except using Snap Art 2 to create a painterly effect. The leaves are Bradford pear leaves from my neighbor's yard, a fitting leaf to show off the pear and has a beautiful array of colors in the fall. Hope you like my image.

Pears, as well as figs, are also beautiful fruit to photograph. There are no two alike, it seems. Some stand perfectly tall while others lean just a bit. There are lumps, bumps and discolorations which make each one unique. Here are images of two pears, both using Kim Klassen's "Thursday" texture, however, the texture in the color photo of the pears was enhanced using Snap Art by Alien Skin Software, the Impasto filter . The black and white pear photo was converted from color to black and white using Topaz-B/W Effects filter. These two photos are being submitted to Texture Tuesday-the number-two eDition. Figs Still Life-The 'and Then Some' eDition

Figs are perfect to photograph and make beautiful fine art images. Colors range from light-green to brown to a dark purple. The fruit inside the fig is studded with tiny seeds and the flesh is a purplish brown color. To achieve this look, I used two textures-'and then some' by Kim Klassen and 'beau linge paysage' from Flypaper Textures, then a Nik filter 'duplex' to alter the bright colors a bit.

Tintagel Parish Church Cross

Standing majestically overlooking the patchwork green hillside of Tintagel on the Cornish coast, this moss and lichen covered monument is located in the large graveyard at Tintagel Parish Church built between the late 11th century and the early 12th century. At the small car park by the church is a coastal path that leads to Tintagel Castle, said to be the birthplace of King Arthur, the lengendary king of the Britons. The coastal walk to Tintagel affords stunning views of the ruins which date back to the Romano-Briton era; however, there is no Roman structure to prove that. Later in the 13th century, the Earl of Cornwall built a castle which fell into ruin, the remains are what one sees today.

Having undergone extensive restorations and renovations, the iconic Forsyth fountain still stands proud in Forsyth park, the first large park created in the beautiful historic city of Savannah, Georgia. Installed in 1858, the fountain is thought to be an exact copy of the one in Place de la Concorde square, a famous square in Paris.

In the last year, the Georgia National Guard fort built in 1915 was renovated and expanded to create a combinedVisitors Center/Starbucks/Forsyth Park Cafe replete with a surrounding fountain and retractable band shell for outdoor concerts. Forsyth Park is a perfect place to picnic, enjoy a baseball game or concert or just to wander around and enjoy the beautiful scenery in this lovely area of Savannah.

Texture Tuesday-Movie eDition-Lady in White

For Texture Tuesday-the Movie eDition. Lady in White, a 1938 film. Basically, the photo only alludes to the name of the movie, not the plot. I took two photos, one without the figure and one with the figure. The two photographs were merged, then ghostly figures attained by adjusting the opacity of that layer. Next the "plaster" texture from Kim Klassen was used. Lastly, a levels and curves adjustment.

Although they are lovely photographed in color, this black and white study still reveals the lovely shape and texture of the peach. One of my dreams is to live in an old renovated cottage on a beach with an inlet behind me, a dock extending into the inlet and a small beautifully appointed dock house for guests. A place where I could take a little boat out to fish, shrimp, crab or just enjoy the waters.

Three chunks of seedless watermelon for Texture Tuesday-the number 3 eDition. I'm not sure I'm that crazy about the post processing, but here are the specifics- three textures used (3 textures, 3 chunks watermelon)-Scratched magic-Screen 72%, Warm Sun-Multiply 74%, and Just Blush-Multiply 34%.

A more simple texture processing using just one texture, Brushed Linen two times, blending mode Multiply 100% and Multiply 80% with some texture brushed away from the red jam.

A Bounty of Fresh Vegetables from the South Carolina Low Country and Scenes from Trip to Kiawah Island

Just spent lovely week at Kiawah Island, riding bikes on the miles and miles of nearly pristine beach, cruising the area looking for local fresh shrimp to bring back home and visiting the Firefly Distillery on Wadmalaw Island, sampling their famous Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka. Even though the resort had many first class restaurants to choose from, we cooked meals in our villa's well-equipped kitchen. Having said that, I did lug my cast iron frying pan that I'm never without! Everyday, we ate shrimp in some form, had sandwiches of dead ripe Heirloom Cherokee Purple tomatoes sliced on soft grocery store white bread slathered with mayonnaise (Duke's or Hellmans, your choice) and sprinkled with cracked black pepper. Heavenly and oh, so simple! We fried fresh okra and patty pan squash and for dessert, enjoyed fresh strawberries and creamy vanilla ice cream. I'm happy to report that there was no weight gain!

Image shot with a converted Canon D60 and a Canon 75-300mm f/5.6 lens at 155mm, f/4.5, IS0 200. If you mouse over the image, you will see that the background of the Raw file is brick colored while the leaves are white and the butterfly is black and white rather that black and yellow.

For Texture Tuesday, Golden Garlic has two layers of the Kim Klassen texture "golden", one with linear burn blending mode at 60% and the second with soft light blending mode at 39%. Boy on the Beach-Wassaw Island, Georgia

For Texture Tuesday, texture and a person assignment. Using just one texture (oceanside by Kim Klassen) several times, brushing away the texture from Luke and finishing with a levels and curves adjustment. Wassaw Island, a National Wildlife Refuge near Savannah, Georgia, is accessible only by private boat or from marina charters. With a wide expanse of beautiful unspoiled beach, it's my favorite place to spend the day with a picnic lunch.

Ft. Pulaski, Cockspur Island, Georgia

Over the many years, I have visited Ft. Pulaski, I have amassed many photographs beginning with a SLR film camera, then evolving to a DSLR and now working with creative lenses such as the Lensbaby. This photo was taken with the original Lensbaby 2.0 . You can see that the point of focus is on the cannon while the left side of the photo has what we call "creative blur". The original photo below is somewhat flat and uninteresting.

The two textures below were combined into one to create the final image. While in Bruges, Belgium this past month, I photographed a document framed under glass at the beautiful City Hall there.

After editing the text photo, I combined it with Kim Klassen's newest texture, Mayzee.

Vintage Currency from Chiang Kai-shek Era

From the Chiang Kai-shek era in China, this coin and paper money photo was processed using Kim Klassen's scratched magic and warm sun textures. Additional processing was done with Nik Efex Pro 2.0 software. My father-in-law, a B29 pilot, brought this money back from his travels while serving in the USAF near the end of WW11. Intrigued by money from different countries, my husband began a coin collection and eagerly awaited his Dad's return from his tours.

Dahlias

For Texture Tuesday, a demitasse cup filled with dahlias. Kim Klassen's brushed linen texture was used three times, each with a different blending mode, then some of the texture brushed away from the flowers. A levels adjustment was done initially and a curves adjustment on the last layer.

Chicago Harbor Lighthouse

Cruising through the locks from the Chicago River out to Lake Michigan, the Chicago Harbor lighthouse comes into view. Originally constructed in 1893, the original lighthouse consisted only of a cast iron tower. After relocation to a breakwater near the Navy Pier in 1917, a red roofed fog signal building and a boathouse were added. The original 3rd order Fresnel lens exhibited at the Chicago Worlds Fair in 1893 is still in operation today. Restoration of the lighthouse was completed in 1997. In 2005, the city of Chicago applied for ownership, but the wheels of government move slowly. Finally, after 4 years of consideration by the Department of the Interior, the Chicago Harbor lighthouse became the property of the city. Plans are in the works to open the lighthouse to the public as a museum. Source

Photos of the lighthouse are best shot with a long lens from the Navy Pier or from a tour boat. This photo was taken with a Leica d-lux 5 and post-processed using two textures, cirrus skies and tempest sea, both from Flypaper Textures

Jemez Pueblo Pottery

Jemez Pueblo is a federally recognized tribe in north-central New Mexico, just northwest of Albuquerque. The tribe is one of the 19 remaining pueblos of New Mexico covering 89,000 miles and home to 3400 tribal members. Traditional pottery from this pueblo had nearly died out until its revival in the later 1960's. Pottery of this region is red-slipped or buff ware with red, black or buff designs. This pot was made by Martina Chinana, one of many artists who is struggling to have Jemez gain respect as a major pottery producing pueblo. Source. I bought my pot while visiting the environs of Las Vegas a few years ago, never realizing the history behind this style of pottery.

Because this pot is one of my favorite pottery pieces, I wanted to showcase some small yellow flowers from my garden, anyway before the heat hits us here in Georgia, and I have only dried up leaves. For this Texture Tuesday, we were to use one of Kim Klassen's textures named "Serendipity". I also used another of Kim's textures named Vintage Teal and also, Sonnet.

Located in the Roundhouse Railroad Museum in historic Savannah, Georgia, this Savannah to Atlanta diesel electric engine is part of a collection of railroad engines, cars and other railway memorabilia housed in what is believed to be the largest Antebellum railroad repair facility still in existence in the world. Recognized as part of a National Historic Landmark District, the Roundhouse Railroad Museum offers scheduled tours and train rides and is an educational and fun way to pass a few hours with children.Source.

A Dozen Free Range Eggs

Tuesday was a busy day for me and although, I finished editing this photo on Tuesday, I am just posting it today for Texture Tuesdays. These beautiful eggs are from my brother-in-law who has around 25 chickens, give or take. Apparently, they are very happy free range (to a certain area) chickens because they produce dozens and dozens of eggs, many of which are double yolk eggs.

I never tire of photographing his eggs as each seems to be just a little different in shape, color and size. Happy and healthy chickens! My egg photo has two textures from the Kim Klassen collection-brushed linen and sepia scratched, each texture further edited to create the final image.

March 2011 Photo a Day

March was a difficult month to shoot a photo per day. Some days, I shot 3 or 4 photos a day, but trying to keep with the theme, decided not to include some of them as they were of the same subject matter. Maybe April will be a better shooting month. Although I began this project with the idea of just shooting food and food still life photos, I've begun to realize that including landscape photos, photos with creative editing and more photos with people would be a better mix for this project.
